The Story Behind Get Miles: How One Journey Became Gear, Community, and Adventure for All

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

If you’ve ever found yourself on a trail, pedaling through a mix of wind, sun, and the occasional bug in your eye, you know the moment. You pass another cyclist, runner, or walker—there it is: the nod, the smile, the wave. It’s the unspoken code of “We’re all out here, trying not to fall over.” That’s the spirit of Get Miles, a brand born from love, sweat, and more than a few wobbly near-misses.

Meet Troy (aka The Natural)

Troy is that guy. You know, the one who can pick up any sport and make it look like he’s been doing it his whole life. Mountain biking? No problem. Gourmet cooking? Sure, why not. Troy’s the friend who charges up hills and casually throws in a joke while you’re gasping for air. If it involves movement, Troy’s all in.

Enter Megan (aka The Spreadsheet Queen)

And then there’s Megan. If Troy is the guy who scales mountains, Megan is the one planning the safest, most efficient route up and down, preferably with data. Athletic prowess? Let’s just say she’s better at analyzing numbers than chasing them on two wheels. But Megan has an uncanny ability to push herself mentally and keep things organized (Troy’s gear, for example). So, when they met, she decided to try keeping up—one cautious pedal at a time.

From City Bikes to 30-Mile Comedy Acts

Their cycling journey began with rented city bikes. First outing: 30 miles. Cue Megan’s bike running out of battery halfway through, leaving them to push it uphill until they found a replacement. It was equal parts comedy and cardio. Megan soon graduated to a Peloton. But any cyclist will tell you: indoor cycling and outdoor roads are like comparing kittens and lions.

Next came the e-bike, which offered just enough “boost” for Megan to stay upright and feel heroic. After many trials, scrapes, and “Did you see that?” moments, Megan eventually switched to a regular bike. Fast forward a couple of years, and they’re tackling long, challenging rides—Megan holding her own, Troy proudly beaming.

A Shout and a Smile (and Some Confusion)

One day, while pedaling from downtown Kansas City to the quaint streets of Parkville, they noticed how cyclists and runners shared that brief moment of solidarity—the universal “I see you.” Megan, ever the idea machine, turned to Troy and said, “What if we just shouted ‘Get Miles!’ at everyone?” So, they tried it. Most people’s faces read: “Did they just yell something?” But a few smiles peeked through. And just like that, ‘Get Miles’ became their thing.

A Brand Takes Off (Finally, a Good Idea)

On another ride, Megan and Troy shared a look. “Has anyone actually turned ‘Get Miles’ into a brand?” they wondered. The rest of the ride was filled with brainstorming—community stories, gear (that wouldn’t look out of place after a muddy wipeout), and ideas that celebrated every bump and high-five on the trail.

A selection of Get Miles T-shirts neatly arranged on boxes, showcasing the brand’s bold, adventure-inspired designs in various colors, perfect for cyclists, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Troy had always dreamed of starting a T-shirt company. Sure, some of his previous ideas (“Paaaaannnnndemic” T-shirts, anyone?) missed the mark, but this was different. This was something they both loved, rooted in shared experiences and their signature mix of grit and humor. It aligned with their core values: kindness, encouragement, and building a community where everyone’s journey mattered.

Community First (And Always)

A group of riders gathered outside Velo Garage and Tap House, bikes lined up and helmets on, sharing laughs and gearing up for a group ride, capturing the community spirit of Get Miles

Get Miles isn’t just gear; it’s a nod to every cyclist who’s made it up a hill, every runner who’s powered through that last mile, and every friend who’s joined the journey. It’s for the crew at Velo Garage and Taphouse, the friends roped into rides that were “easy” (they weren’t), and the countless faces who became more than just people on the trail—they became family.

So here they are: just a boy and a girl, standing in front of a community of cyclists, asking them to be part of the ride. To nod, smile, yell ‘Get Miles’ and share that spirit. Let’s get out there, laugh a little, and keep getting miles together.

A playful Notting Hill-inspired meme featuring the line, 'I'm just a girl standing in front of cyclists asking them to love me,' humorously capturing a heartfelt plea to the cycling community.
